Genre Interest Blog A Level

Today marks the beginning of our groups genre research! In order to gain a better understanding of what we want our film to encapsulate, we organized a plan to research different genres of film and pick out which genre best suited the concept of our film. The three genres that we have decided to research and pick from are thriller, action, and sci-fi. These genres have a variety of differences and we want to make sure that we pick the genre that will best fit our movie, so we began work researching all of them. Our research plan was to first research the different movies that were associated with each genre and see if they had a similar concept to the concept we had for our movie. After watching and looking at different examples from each genre, we would then researched the common camera angles, mis-en-scene, sounds, and edits associated with each genre.

After devising our plan, we got ready to research. We would start with thriller and we would look at movies from this genre such as newer movies like Nope and Bullet Train, as well as older films such as Oceans Eleven and The Shining. We would look out for common aspects of these films such as the stereotypical use of VFX, explosions, fast paced scenes, and over-extended scenes.

Next we decided to research the action genre which we knew from past experiences would include fun, fast paced films. Some movies that we would look into from this genre include James Bond, John Wick, and Top Gun. These movies are exhilarating and look quite similar to what we want our film to encapsulate.

Finally, we would research films from the sci-fi genre. Films that we would look into in this genre are Star Wars, Star Trek, and The Matrix. Sci-fi movies almost always have that futuristic kind of look to them and some common film aspects that are used in these movies are lots of VFX and space themed mis-en-scene.

After researching, I believe that our group will have a much better grasp of what we could compare our film concept to and what we could do to make our movie as good as production films.
